THE letter from W J Taylor (LT December 11) is unfair in comparing Bolton's leisure facilities with those of Darwen.

Bolton's population is about 10 times the size of Darwen. Recent brochures sent out by Bolton Council don't state that the people of Bolton were complaining bitterly when the council closed down their equivalent of Waves in the town centre a few years ago and have not built a replacement.

In contrast, Darwen is to see a brand new leisure centre built and two new sports halls.

Mr Taylor also states that in 2007 Darwen will not have a sports hall. This isn't true as there is Darwen Vale Community Leisure Centre. This centre provides excellent and varied facilities.

Further, he states that sports hall users will be disadvantaged compared to those people who will use the new pool and gym. That again isn't true as pool users will have to wait 18 months to two years for the new pool whilst the new sports hall at Vale will be ready in November 2007.

In addition, a new sports hall, outdoor all-weather pitch and other facilities will be built at the Academy in 2008-09.

Bowlers, five-a-side soccer players, badminton, indoor tennis players will all have better facilities than previously. And, in addition, Blacksnape playing fields are being improved.

I fully support Councillor Nigel Nuttall's drive for better sporting and leisure facilities for our town.

MRS JOYCE BARON, Woodbank Avenue, Darwen.
