Recently I was treated at the Accrington Pals Health Centre, and in the reception area there was a wonderful pictorial tribute to the Accrington Pals, very informative and moving.
On the way home, via Oswaldtwistle, I drove past that wonderful memorial in Oswaldtwistle, but back home in Blackburn I realised there was no such memorial like the ones in Oswaldtwistle, and at the health centre in Accrington.
As the grandson of a soldier who sadly lost his life on the Somme in 1916, this is disgusting. Yes Blackburn did have several ‘parish’ memorials, but no central memorial. Why!
Blackburn certainly lost more men in both wars than the Hyndburn towns of Accrington and Oswaldtwistle, and is certainly more wealthy than Hyndburn. Perhaps in the building of the new Cathedral quarter we could see incorparated a memorial to all Blackburn’s servicemen and women, plus civilians who have lost their lives in all conflicts.
I realise such a memorial would cost money, but may be Blackburn could forego spending money on ridiculous so-called sculptures that decorate the town, and perhaps most of Blackburn residents don’t want.
