Labour MPs must be desperate for Parliament’s summer recess to begin.

North West Labour veteran Michael Meacher MP has claimed that party members are “bewildered, hurt, disorientated and despairing” by the decision of Ed Miliband and Ed Balls to accept the thrust of the Coalition Government’s financial policies.

They must feel betrayed by their party leadership.

If they are truly bewildered, they must have been listening to their own rhetoric for too long.

Liberal Democrats want to build a stronger economy and a fairer society, but the government is still borrowing over £200 million every day to finance investment and public services, while getting deeper into debt as a result. I’m with those who would like more investment to boost the economy but I’m not confident in saying how much extra I would risk borrowing.

The Coalition Government treads a fine line: get it wrong, spook the markets, and interest rates will have to go up. That will close businesses, send unemployment soaring, increase the welfare bill and force house repossessions.

If Labour members are ‘hurt’ now, how much closer to despair will they be if this were to happen?
