Jonathan ‘BJ’ Chela is right to raise awareness of the prisoners detained at Guantanamo Bay (LT, June 18).
But your repeated use of the words ‘Cuban jail’ is misleading and false.
The prison is an American creation on Cuban territory, illegally occupied since 1903.
The Cuban people abhor what is done there. To say the prisoners are ‘unfairly detained’ is an understatement.
Up to 166 are on hunger strike and the numbers are growing.
Some have been hospitalised and are being force-fed. Many have been there for 11 years without charge and have been cleared for release. One of them is British citizen Shaker Aamer.
President Obama has broken his 2009 election promise to close down the barbaric site where prisoners have no legal protection and are tortured.
