FOUR new Deputy Lieutenants of Lancashire have been appointed to assist the Lord-Lieutenant Lord Shuttleworth in representing the Queen.
The new appointees are:
* Professor Christopher Carr of Lancaster
Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Cumbria.
* Mrs Hazel Harding CBE of Crawshawbooth
Chairman, East Lancashire Hospitals Trust.
* Professor Paul Wellings of Lancaster
Vice-Chancellor, Lancaster University.
* Mr Alan Whittaker of Heskin, Chorley
Former Chairman, Lancashire County Council.
The new Deputies join around 50 others across the county.
The Office of Lord-Lieutenant is military in origin and dates from the reign of Henry VIII when the holder was responsible for the maintenance of order and for military purposes relating to local defence.
Lord-Lieutenants are Her Majesty’s personal representatives and arrange royal visits, present medals, and lead the local magistracy.
