A COMMUNITY hub is in need of urgent repairs costing hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The Barlow, in Bolton Road, Edgworth, needs around £200,000 for roof repairs over the next five years, a building survey has revealed.
However, trustees hope to temporarily secure the 108-year-old Edwardian building from leaks, with works costing £12,000.
And the fundraising pot will be boosted thanks to a charity auction tomorrow.
Trustee Colin Rigby said that despite the task ahead, they were confident they could secure the building with temporary work. He said: “There is a lot of fundraising to do over the next few years. However, raising about £12,000 will give us the breathing space to do the rest a bit later on.
“It is very much a centre of the community so I hope everyone will back us as we try to raise the funds we need.”
The building, which houses local history groups, bridge groups and other community activities, is open on a day-to-day basis with rooms for hire, community events and a Saturday library and café which is popular with locals and visitors.
Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council withdrew its funding due to cuts in 2011, handing it back to local community responsibility.
The running of the community centre has been headed up by volunteers who use room hire and events to cover operating costs.
Tomorrow’s grand charity auction will kick-start the fundraising with a guest appearance from entertainer ‘Henry VIII’.
Tickets cost £5 and include a glass of wine, cheese and nibbles plus one entry into a roof fund raffle.
