RESIDENTS in Chorley are being asked to suggest a new home for an iconic statue that was rescued from auction and returned to the town.
The statue of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli used to take a prominent position above a shop on the corner of Cleveland Street and Chapel Street but was taken down to allow work on the roof.
While in storage the statue was repaired and it was hoped that it would be reinstated but costs proved prohibitive and the owner decided to sell it.
Coun Peter Goldsworthy, leader of Chorley Council, said: “The statue was due to be sold at auction but there was a strong feeling that the statue should remain in the town.
“The council made a simple request to the owners to see if they would donate it to us for free so we could find a new home for it in Chorley and they agreed. We are now looking for the best place to put it on display in Chorley.”
If you have a suggestion, call the council on 01257 515151, or email contact@chorley.gov.uk
