Due to a landslip there are no trains running between Leyland and Bolton as the line is blocked.
The disruption is expected to last until 9am and coaches were put on from Preston going to Bolton.
Delays and cancellations are expected to trains running through Buckshaw Parkway, Adlington Lancashire, Chorley, Lostock, Horwich Parkway and Blackrod.
Network rail staff are currently clearing the blockage, caused by the severe weather last night.
Northern Rail said on Twitter: "Due to a landslip no trains can run between Leyland and Bolton in this direction only.
"Buckshaw Parkway, Adlington Lancashire, Chorley, Lostock, Horwich Parkway and Blackrod will not be served.
"Train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or diverted.
"Road transport has been confirmed as follows: 4 x full size coaches will depart Preston between 8am and 08.15am, all stations to Bolton.
"Run by S Line Travel, Coastal Coaches and Express Travel."
