SIX former county councillors are set to be recognised for their contribution to life in Lancashire.

In a special meeting of the full council at 11am on Thursday, the six will be put forward to be honoured as aldermen of the county.

The nominees are Graham Davies (Ribble North, Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-Dale, 1981-2009); Doreen Pollitt (Hyndburn Central, 1989-2009); Richard Shepherd (West Lancashire East, 1985-2009); Joyce Stuart (Fylde West, 1989-2009); Bernard Whittle OBE (Fylde East, Fylde South, 1989-2009) and Don Yates (Chorley East, 1981-2009).

The title of honorary alderman is awarded to former county councillors who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the council but who are no longer serving members.

In order to be approved as an honorary alderman of Lancashire, more than two-thirds of county councillors attending Thursday's meeting must vote in favour.

County Councillor Geoffrey Roper, chairman of Lancashire County Council, said: "Becoming an alderman of Lancashire is a tremendous honour and a true reflection of what these people have done for the people of Lancashire and the county council.

"Between them, they have given more than 120 years service with the county council.

"I'm pleased that they are getting the recognition they deserve.

"I look forward to Thursday's meeting and the chance to honour them for the dedication, loyalty and commitment they have shown over the years."
