LANCASHIRE’S libraries have launched a ‘novel’ new fashion accessory – the new Bag for Lit.
The bags were on show at County Hall, where County Coun David Smith explained that they were made from recycled paper.
He said: “This is the first time in the country that libraries have recycled paper waste into a viable commercial product.
“Put simply, the more paper waste we send to Severnside Recycling, the more credit we accrue to turn that waste into Bags for Lit.
"It’s a very practical and cost-effective process that we’re sure will inspire similar schemes elsewhere.
“And, of course, the contemporary design of the bags makes them a great way to promote Lancashire libraries."
The bags, based on a design by Thom Isom, a 17-year-old arts student from Ormskirk, are large and sturdy enough to hold several books, CDs and DVDs.
They cost only 50 pence and are available in libraries across the county.
