AN HISTORIC recreational area has been transformed by an army of volunteers.

Residents of Roe Lee, Blackburn, put in a hard shift to spruce up Brownhill Plantation, a woodland just off Whalley New Road.

The group used tools and equipment supplied by Blackburn with Darwen Council to clear away undergrowth that had covered steps and paving.

Resident Maurice Ffelan, who coordinated the activities, said: "The Brownhill Plantation was a popular spot for promenading and relaxing in the early years of the last century but it has suffered from neglect in recent years resulting in the paths becoming overgrown and often impassable.

“It is our long-term aim to return it to its former glory and the council scheme gave us the chance to make a good start.

“We are also interested in the history of the Plantation and would welcome any information and memories, especially photographs from any date.”

Councillor leader Kate Hollern said: “Residents tell me and my colleagues that clean streets and public open spaces are important to them but they have also told us that they want to play a part in helping to tackle the problems.

“That is why, despite the tough economic times, we have bought equipment for residents to use free of charge to clean up their area.

“This is a great example of a group deciding to make a difference and the Council supporting them.”
