FORTY firefighters from across the region were drafted in to a deal with a dramatic water rescue – but it was all in the name of training.
Led by Blackburn watch manager Chris Fogarty, the simulated rescue of an officer on Friday involved inflatables, sledges and ropes beside the River Darwen in Witton Park.
Mr Fogarty said: “If someone goes into the water, we have to know what we would do.
“The plans we have are complex, and crews need to learn about the environment and the equipment.
“The River Darwen at this time of year can be very dangerous, with high water flowing quickly.
"Children often play nearby, and within 30 minutes of an operation like this, they could be swept across Blackburn.
“With half-term, it is quite relevant.
“Learning rescue techniques here also helps us to deal with incidents that might occur in the area’s reservoirs, and we have it all programmed into a computer, ready to go when needed.”
Officers from Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, Bamber Bridge and Preston took part in the training.
Firefighters often practice operational plans for a range of environments, including shopping centres, industrial estates and chemical works.
