POLICE firearms officers were called into action this afternoon after reports of two men with a gun in a park.
Officers also deployed a search helicopter and dog handlers after a member of the public reported two young men with a gun sitting on a bench in Queen’s Park at 5.40pm today.
The pair were on the bowling green area of the park, and police say they were not threatening other park-users with the weapon.
Two men, thought to be in their early 20s, were tracked down and one had an air pistol. He was arrested and the other man was released after being searched.
He was taken to Greenbank police station where he was set to be kept overnight for questioning.
Inspector Nick Williams-Jones said: “I want to reassure people that we take incidents like this very seriously, and at no time was any member of the public in any danger.
“This was totally an isolated incident.”
The park was not evacuated because there were not many people in the area at the time, he added.
