A DETAILED forensic examination has been carried out at the flat where a man sustained life-threatening head injuries during an alleged assault.

James Patterson, 51, was found slumped unconscious by police after they broke down the door of a property in Formby Close, Blackburn.

The incident has shocked residents of the street, which is where Blackburn Rovers striker Paul Gallagher grew up.

Mr Patterson, was found at the ground floor flat at 2.15pm on Thursday. He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for a brain scan and then transferred to the specialist neurological unit at Royal Preston Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

He is now said to be in a 'very poorly' condition.

Forensic experts combed the scene on Thursday night and also returned to the flat today. The property and its back garden was taped off while officers carried out their inquiries. It is thought that Mr Patterson lived in the flat next door, which is separated from the flat by a wide driveway.

Neighbours said he had moved to the area about six months ago from Scotland in order to be near family.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "He enjoyed a drink but was a quiet man. I hope he pulls through."

Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: "I didn't see what happened, but there were crowds of people from the houses gathered around the front garden having a look.

"I want to move off here."

Two men, aged 47 and 37, and a 39-year-old woman, all from Blackburn, were arrested in relation to the suspected assault and are in custody.
