ORGANISERS of an annual charity fun run have spoken of their disappointment after just 50 runners turned up to take part.

It was hoped more runners than ever would turn up after the competitive element was reintroduced for the Witton Park race in 2006 when £4,000 was raised, but it is thought the rain deterred many from taking part.

Roy Parker, publicity officer for The Rotary Club of Blackburn Borough, said: "There weren't as many as we hoped.

"We think the rain has put a lot of people off coming.

"We usually get quite a few coming on the day so it's a shame."

The club had produced 700 forms up on 500 from the year before after a surge in interest from the successful 2006 event.

However, the rain failed to dampen the spirit of those who turned up, some of whom arrived dressed as fairies and in kilts.

Pam White, 65, of Risedale Grove in Blackburn said she was determined to do the walk in spite of the poor weather to raise money for East Lancashire Hospice which had supported her through breast cancer.

She said: "I used to go to the hospice on Fridays after I had breast cancer. It was really good, very supportive and worthwhile.

Liaquat Mohammed, 39, of Lynwood Road in Blackburn said: "I like to keep healthy and stay mobile.

"A friend rang me up yesterday and asked if I'd like to do it.."

Sarah Small, of Cambridge Drive, Padiham, said: "The weather wasn't the best, but it's for a good cause so I wanted to come and take part."

Runners completed a four mile route while under-15s and walkers a two mile route in aid of East Lancashire Hospice and other Rotary charities. All participants received certificates
