A HEAD ON collision between a car and a lorry on a busy Blackburn road left a 63-year-old woman in a hospital with neck injuries.

The crash took place just after 9am yesterday outside the Red Earth Cantonese Takewaway in Bolton Road in Ewood.

Five police cars attended and closed the road between Lock Mill Service Station and Thwaites Empire Theatre for three hours to wait for specialist haulage towing services.

It is understood to have been caused when the driver came into the path of the Mercedes Axer truck, which was carrying construction site debris from the old Blackburn Infirmary to Clifton Marsh waste disposal site.

The woman, who has not been named, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.

The driver of the truck, Alan Catterall, a driver for Chorley-based Ruttle Plant Ltd, said said: “I had just driven past the traffic lights when a car heading in the opposite direction emerged into my path from behind the one in front. I tried to brake as quickly as possible but because it’s such a heavy vehicle it took some time.

“It really shook me up and I hope that she is ok.”

Meanwhile nearby businesses told of their reactions.

The owner of Ewood Convenience Store Michael Mead said: “I heard a massive screech and a crash.

“Everyone who was at home came out of their houses to look because it’s not something you see everyday even though it is a busy road.

Decorator Matt Hummer said: “It looked awful when I saw it.

“And I hope that no one was seriously hurt.”
