PEOPLE who have been killed while at work will be remembered at a Workers Memorial Day event in Blackburn, on Saturday.

Over the past two years the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recorded 45 workers killed in workplace incidents in the North West.

In East Lancashire one person died at work in Blackburn during 2010/11 and there were 64 non-fatal injuries.

There have also been a number of non-fatal minor injuries in other districts, including 34 in Burnley, 50 in Chorley, 35 in Hyndburn, 37 in Pendle, 30 in Ribble Valley and 20 in Rossendale.

In Lancashire, there were 2,385 injuries resulting in more than three days off work.

However, the total figure for all those killed at and by work is far higher.

The HSE figures only record a fraction of all worker deaths, excluding those who die from work-related illnesses.

Gathering outside Blackburn Town Hall at 1pm, workers and family members with flags and banners, will hold a brief rally.

They will then walk to the Workers Memorial Day commemorative tree at Sudell Cross, where a wreath will be laid at 2pm.

The Trades Union Congress says that April 28 should be seen as a day of action to defend Health and Safety from cuts and attacks on regulation and enforcement.
