A MAN who is able to make realistic sound effects using only his voice has been asked by a star of the Police Academy films to take part in an international competition.

Simon Entwistle, from Clitheroe, who works as a tourism guide, has been contacted by Michael Winslow, who played Sgt Larvelle ‘Motor Mouth’ Jones in the Police Academy movies, with a view to travelling to the USA later this year.

Simon has been in demand this year due to his expertise on the Pendle Witch Trials, which happened 400 years ago.

He said: “Last week I got an email from an agent representing the actor and comedian Michael Winslow.

“He can make a considerable number of sound effects by using just his mouth. Back in the 1980s I also made quite a few sound effects just for fun, but I did get on a few high profile shows such as That’s Life, Game For A Laugh, Beadle’s About and Blue Peter.

“I also made a radio jingle commercial and a sound effect for BBC drama. I never pursued this career as my real love for Ribble Valley tourism took over. I do use the effects on the coaches while telling stories.”

Simon’s effects include an air raid siren, a dentist’s drill and trotting horses.

He said: “Michael Winslow has organised a sound effects competition in the USA to be screened on the American network, and has invited people like myself to compete. I doubt very much that I will win the competition, but I will certainly enjoy the experience.”

Mr Winslow, 53, is dubbed the Man of 10,000 Sound Effects. He still performs on American television and as a stand-up.
