BLACKBURN’S orbital route has created a “moat” that is putting traders out of business, claims the Chamber of Trade.

Members are concerned that closing roads and reversing the traffic flow is “creating misery for small traders”, and that money to finish the route would be better spent on renovation work.

Chairman Tony Duckworth said: “When you’re inside the orbital route, it seems you’re supposed to abandon your car and walk around.

“Places like Northgate are closed to traffic suddenly and, with no cars going past, businesses are suffering. People will not walk very far out, and businesses on the edge are being hit.

“It seems that all the expensive properties are inside the orbital route, and everything on the outside is being left to rot.

“Changing roads, such as the reversal of traffic in King Street, is also having a big impact on traders there, as people are now travelling out of town, and nobody stops off on their way home.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council is buying out businesses and land in the Freckleton Street area to complete the orbital route from the Wainright Bridge to Montague Street.

Brian Bailey, director of regeneration, said: “The final phase of the orbital route will kickstart redevelopment of that side of the town centre, attracting new businesses and hundreds of new jobs to the area.

"The route of the final phase is the preferred option following consultation last year.

"The compulsory purchase orders are a last resort and we are continuing to work with local businesses to reach agreements.”
