THE Titanic in Lancashire Museum is now officially registered with the US auction house selling Wallace Hartley’s last letter.

The auction will take place in New Hampshire from today until to April 26 and the Colne-based museum has now raised around £4,000, enough to be able to bid for the letter.

But it still needs more donations and says that figure will not be enough to bring the letter, written by bandmaster Wallace while on board the ship, back to his hometown.

Nigel Hampson, museum curator, said: “People in Colne and Lancashire feel passionately about him.

“We’re still touched by the tragedy and his bravery as he played on whilst Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland.

“We all feel that this historic last letter should be on public display in the UK in our museum, not hidden away in a private collection abroad.

Donations can be made via PayPal on the website www.titanicinlancs.com, or by sending a cheque or giving cash at the museum.
