VOLUNTEERS will monitor a road where two fatal accidents have happened.

The stretch at Bull Hill, heading out of Darwen, has caused concern for several years.

Over the weekend, Jack Eatock, 26, from Astley, Greater Manchester, was killed when his car struck a barrier and dry-stone wall on the A666 Bolton Road, near Cadshaw Cottages.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash which happened close to the spot where three people were killed when a car hit a lamp-post in October last year.

Now, volunteers are to be trained in how to use a community camera to monitor traffic on the road.

Coun David Foster, who is leading the safety campaign, said speeding had been a continuing problem for some time.

He said: “The issue was brought up at a ward solution meeting. The police said they would monitor it and put up warning signs, but they just get ignored.

“People need to take care at the site. A lot simply drive too fast.”

Speeding drivers photographed by the volunteers will be sent a warning letter, and if they are caught again they can be prosecuted.

Whitehall town councillor John East also has concerns.

He said: “Residents up there have complained that there is a lot of tailgating. People drive very closely to the car in front and then overtake where it is dangerous.”

Borough mayor and Whitehall councillor Karimeh Foster is also supporting the campaign.

She said: “I am really sad to hear about the loss of such a young person this weekend.”
