A COLNE councillor is calling for action over “bizarre” signs erected on land in the Knotts Lane area of town.

On Wednesday the owner of the piece of land placed a container on the property, and erected a number of notices that exclaimed: “Private Farm. Danger. Deep Water. Keep Out.”

The container was also painted with the same message.

Coun Tony Greaves said: “This is a small piece of land covered in grass, which contains half-a-dozen protected trees.

“It’s a narrow strip across the back street of one of the blocks of houses in Hawley Street, and lies at the side of Knotts Drive, the entrance road into the Knotts Drive/Knotts Mount estate.

Last year the owner twice applied for planning permission to build a house on the land, and was rightly refused each time by councillors in Colne.

He appealed twice and his appeal was twice turned down.

I can only assume that this is some kind of bizarre response to not getting his own way on the planning applications.

“The writing on the wall alongside Knotts Drive is obviously aimed at the residents. I cannot imagine what he is going to do with this land – to call it a farm is just silly.”

Coun Greaves was planning to raise the matter at the Colne and District Committee meeting last night and to discuss the next step that can be taken.
