A TRAFFIC survey of ‘Hyndburn’s worst junction’ has seen highways chiefs agree action is needed.

County Coun Malcolm Pritchard began lobbying roads bosses over the problem junction in Accrington, after seeing drivers wait up to 20 minutes just to turn.

He said daily queues at the junction of Dunkenhalgh Way, Henry Street, Hyndburn Road and Dill Hall Lane showed a clear need for the light sequence to be adjusted.

Lancashire County Council said no decision has yet been made, but traffic counts show options to ease congestion should be considered.

Coun Pritchard’s main objection was that the lights do not allow a filter lane for traffic from Henry Street and Church to turn right, causing major queues as drivers have to wait for a lull.

Engineers at LCC are assessing the result of the traffic count and are looking at developing potential options using computer programs to assess impact elsewhere.

LCC said they would assess the junction in January, and Coun Pritchard said he was please engineers agreed with him that it qualified for a change.

He said: “I am delighted, because it’s one of those things that holds up a person’s day and just drags things down.

“So many people use that junction and to sit and wait just for the want of a filter light is crazy. You’d go mad doing that every day.

"It’s puts 40 minutes on someone’sjourney to and from work and surely that is way too much time wasted. I am thrilled that LCC see the need for a change.”
