FIREFIGHTERS came under attack as they tried to put out blazing rubbish in Nelson.

The fire service was called out to a house in Raglan Street at 11.30pm on Sunday, but as they worked to put out the blaze, a man started throwing plates, glasses and pots at them.

The firefighters had to wait until the police arrived and arrested the 19-year-old man before they could continue to put out the fire and make sure it did not spread to the house.

Watch manager Tom Simpson said: “We did go through a spate when this would happen quite often.

“The guy had obviously had a drink.

“When this happens we just withdraw — we try to keep ourselves out of danger.”

Councillors said these type of behaviour was “unacceptable” and called for strong action.

Ward councillor Nadeem Ahmed said: “This type of behaviour is uncalled for and it is not acceptable.

“The fire crews are trying to do a job to protect members of the public and these criminals are trying to prevent them from doing their job.

“I hope strong action is taken.”

The Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service urge people to be careful in the hot weather as fire can start and spread easily outside.

They appeal to people to only use barbecues in suitable and safe areas, and to take care with the disposal of cigarettes and rubbish, particularly in countryside and grassy areas.
