BUILDING work is to take place on a Pendle community centre which residents want to bring back into use.
Pendle’s West Craven Committee has committed £5,000 to start some work on the Coates Community Centre, in Barnoldswick.
Gill Dickson, borough policy officer, said: “Coates Community Centre has been closed since 2008. At the time it was closed, it was not well used.
“The centre is owned by Housing Pendle and is located on an estate of former social dwellings.
However, only approximately one quarter of the dwellings are now owned by Housing Pendle, with the rest being owner-occupied.
“Since 2009 there has been renewed interest in exploring the potential for the centre to open and provide space and services for the community.”
Further investment will be needed to fully reopen the centre, but a management committee of residents will now be formed to investigate further options and demand for usage.
