FREEZING temperatures, ice and snow brought chaos to East Lancashire over the weekend.

Some roads were closed due to hazardous driving conditions and residents were warned to stay indoors as the arctic conditions swept the country.

Grane Road, between Haslingden and Blackburn, was closed by police from early afternoon on Saturday until Sunday morning because of the build-up of ice and snow on the high road.

Part of the steep Canal Street, in Blackburn, was closed at around 3pm after a car skidded in to four other parked cars, causing minor damage.

The worst conditions were seen in Burnley where heavy snow caused major traffic problems for the 13,000 crowd leaving Turf Moor after Burnley’s game against Peterborough.

The snow began falling during the match and by full-time the surrounding roads were covered. Police were called to help traffic get up Centenary Way, while Burnley Wood residents had to help push cars up part of Parliament Street.

Burnley players Marvin Bartley and Josh McQuoid also got stuck in the snow in the town, and relied on Clarets fans to help free them.

It took some fans over two hours to get to Colne and four hours to get to Accrington. Bus services in the Burnley area were suspended for the night at about 6.30pm because of the conditions.

In Blackburn fire crews were called to the former Scapa industrial premises in Cartmell Road at 2am on Sunday, after a frozen pipe had burst in the attic space and caused a severe flood on the building.

Fire crews across East Lancashire and police reported a relatively quiet night though, with most people following the advice to stay at home.

Inspector Phil Broughton said: “I think most people stayed in the warm, it was a quiet night with no major accidents. It is now a case of monitoring the roads and conditions.”

The temperature is again expected to fall below freezing tomorrow night, although there isn’t likely to be any more snow. It will remain cold for the rest of the week, with tempertatures of around 2 to 3 degrees.

The Lancashire Telegraph is running its Grit Watch campaign again this winter to help keep the region’s roads ice-free.
