SIX public toilets could close across Pendle as the borough council looks to save £1.6million over the next 12 months.

Conveniences in Nelson, Colne, Barrowford, Brierfield and Laneshawbridge have been ear-marked for possible closure to recoup £20,000.

And several others will be transferred to parish councils – with a dowry – to take them off the borough’s books.

Currently there are 18 such toilets across Pendle and the authority spent £139,000 on maintaining them in 2010-11.

The Market Street block in Nelson and the bus station toilets in Colne – said to be too costly to repair – are among the most well-known casualties.

Town hall bosses say the toilets next to Brierfield Town Hall could be phased out in favour of people using the nearby community centre’s facilities instead.

Ball Grove and Laneshawbridge’s toilets will close out-right, as will those at the Fleece in Barrowford.

Parish councillors in Earby will assume control of the town’s Station Hotel and bus station toilets, Goldshawbooth is set to take care of Newchurch’s and a similar arrangement is destined for Barley.

Dean Langton, the council’s finance head, said in a report: “There is no rationale or consistency to the distribution of the conveniences across the borough.

“Many were inherited from former councils and are old-fashioned and unwelcoming. They are not necessarily in the best locations for modern life and demand.”

Other toilets like Sough Park and Barnoldswick’s Letcliffe Park will only open either during summer months or when sports fixtures take place.
