COUNCIL bosses in Burnley insist a developer that previously walked away from a regeneration scheme in the town is the right choice for a new homes plan.

Sheffield-based Gleeson has been named as the firm behind 100 new homes across three sites in Daneshouse, and neighbouring Stoneyholme and Duke Bar.

The decision comes after Gleeson withdrew from a larger 280-home regeneration plan there in September 2008.

Regeneration director Mike Cook said: “We are confident that Gleeson can make these schemes work.

“The decisions taken three years ago were made in a completely different context and Burnley Council is confident the developer will deliver.”

Land has been cleared for the expected new homes for some time and Labour critics have blasted delays in regenerating the area.

Consultations over the scheme will begin at Burnley Boys’ and Girls’ Club on September 13, continuing with sessions at Daneshouse Community Centre the next day, including a women’s-only slot between 10am and 1pm.

Another takes place at the former Colne Road library on September 15.
