DETECTIVES are searching for a mugger who punched a man with learning disabilities in the face.

The 44-year-old victim was approached in Blackburn at 10pm in Montague Street close to the Ugo store, formerly known as Netto.

He was approached by a man who punched him to the side of the face causing him to fall to the ground.

The offender stole his carrier bag and then ran off to join another man who was waiting nearby.

The victim, who is from Blackburn, has bruising on his face and hip as well as a black eye.

Detective Constable Susan Smith from Blackburn CID said: “I am appalled by what has happened with this incident.

"An innocent man has been walking down the road and has been attacked in an unprovoked manner.

"Although the property stolen was minimal, there is no excuse whatsoever for this and we are determined to find those responsible.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident to get in touch with us.

"Even the smallest pieces of information could prove to be valuable.

“The victim has been left extremely shaken and scared following what can only be described as a nasty experience.

"We want to find the people responsible and bring them to justice.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call Blackburn CID on 0845 125 3545 or call Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
