MORE than £10.5million is to be spent on Lancashire County Council primary and secondary schools to bring them up to scratch.

The money is to be spent on urgent repairs such as replacement roofs, doors, walls and boilers.

Lancashire County Council has shared out the funding as part of the first phase of its capital repair programme.

As well as the repairs, the county council is co-ordinating work to reduce the carbon emissions of schools.

Energy saving works include fitting efficient boilers with heating controls, locally controlled thermostatic radiator valves and a replacement of electrical heating systems.

The most money will be spent in Hyndburn and Ribble Valley (£1,844,450), followed by South Ribble (£1,578,741) and West Lancashire (£1,045,000).

Some schools, such as Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School, Oswaldtwistle, which were due to be transformed under the county council’s Building Schools for the Future, BSF, programme have been included.

The BSF scheme was axed by the coalition Government following the General Election.

The council has pledged there will be minimal disruption to children’s education while the works are carried out.

County Councillor Susie Charles, cabinet member for children and schools, welcomed the investment.

She added: “Now we can deal with the highest priority repairs, which will save more money in the long run.

“We have good data on the condition of our schools, but there will be site visits throughout the summer to make sure we have the most up-to-date information that will allow us to plan carefully and make the most of this money.”
