A COUPLE arrested following the death of their two-year-old son have been ‘completely exonerated’ by police.

Sam Upton and Nathan Pratt, both 24, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and child cruelty after officers were called to a house in Barnoldswick.

But today, following a post-mortem examination, police said the death of their son Harrison on Sunday was ‘a tragic accident’.

A police spokeswoman said: “Detectives investigating the death of a two-year-old boy in Barnoldswick say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

“Harrison Upton died on Sunday and since then police have been conducting a very challenging investigation.

“A post-mortem examination has revealed Harrison died of asphyxiation and detectives have concluded his death was a tragic accident.

“A man and woman aged 24 from Barnoldswick were arrested and had been helping police with their enquiries.

“They have now been released without charge having been completely exonerated from having any involvement with Harrison’s death “Detectives wish to pass on their sympathies and condolences to Harrison’s parents as well as his wider family.”

Harrison is understood to have been found in his bedroom at his home in St Mary’s Avenue, on the Coates Estate, on Sunday morning.

The ambulance service was immediately called and paramedics alerted the police to an ‘unexplained’ death.

Police investigating the incident subsequently took Miss Upton and Mr Pratt in for questioning.

They were released from police custody this afternoon. It is thought he may have died following an accident with a cot mattress.

Following Harrison’s death neighbours spoke of their sadness and shock.

One friend described the family, including eldest son four-year-old Caleb, as close and ‘really nice’.

She said: “Everything Sam and Nathan do is for their children.”
