THE family of a Darwen toddler born with two neurological disorders are to raise money for the charity which has given them ‘amazing’ help and support.

Two-year-old Blaine McFarlane was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus leaving him needing around-the-clock care.

Now Blaine’s mum, Maria Graham, 25, is preparing to raise funds for ASBAH (Association for spina bifida and Hydrocephalus) and to raise awareness of the condition and the charity.

She said: “When I was pregnant I found out that Blaine had spina bifida and when he was born I turned to the charity for support.

“The members are amazing and they have really helped me to make our lives easier, so we want to do something in return.”

For the first eight months of his life, Blaine, was in and out of hospital for tests and treatment for problems with his shunts.

Blaine’s hydrocephalus condition, more commonly known as water on the brain, and his spina bifida means he will never walk and is now waiting for his first wheelchair.

Mum-of-two Maria said: “Although he will need to be in a wheelchair, Blaine doesn’t give up. He is a happy little boy and wants to get involved all of the time, playing with his younger brother Cobi and he is trying to say some words.”

ASBAH is a registered charity, which was formed in 1966, initially to help families and individuals affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Maria said: “ASBAH is an excellent charity and I hope we can raise as much money as possible at the event so that they can support more families like us.”

*The charity event is at Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Ewood Park, from 8pm on November 19. Tickets at £25 include entertainment and meal. Call Maria on 07590 192334.
