LANCASHIRE saw six deaths during or following police contact in 2010/11, according to a report.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) published details on the number of deaths after contact with all forces in England and Wales.

According to the figures, Lancashire recorded two deaths in or following police custody, three apparent suicides following custody and one categorised as ‘other’ following police contact.

Nationally, the results were mixed, with a decrease in road pursuit deaths, but a rise in deaths in custody.

Two people were shot in West Yorkshire and Sussex by police firearm officers.

IPCC Interim Chair Len Jackson, said: “There are several positive aspects to these figures, including the lowest number of deaths linked to police pursuits since 2004/05.”
