THE streets where drivers in Burnley are most likely to get a parking fine have been revealed.

And the top ten ‘hot-spots’ are all in the town centre, according to figures released to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Nicholas Street had the most tickets with 22, while Bankfield, Hargreaves Street and St James’s Row came joint second with 19 tickets.

The remaining entries include Bankhouse Street, Parker Lane, Red Lion Street and Coal Street, all of which are also in the town centre.

The figures for May were revealed after a Freedom of Information request to Burnley Council.

Coun Julie Cooper, Labour leader in Burnley, called for changes to parking provision in the town centre.

She said: “It’s important to get parking right in the town centre and I don’t think we have got it right.

“One of the main issues on the pay-and-display car parks is people have to guess how long they are going to be before they pay.

“It would be good to have machines like in other towns where you get a ticket on arrival and pay for what you have used.

"We do have quite a lot of space scattered around the town centre, but the issue is that the car parks are too expensive.”

But Brian Hobbs, president of the Burnley branch of the Chamber of Trade, said: “Are people getting tickets because they are staying for 45 minutes in a 40-minute zone or because they are staying five minutes longer no matter what the limit is?

“The bottom line I think is that parking in Burnley is pretty damn competitive.

“We have to be careful not to complain too much because it is also a useful form of income.”
