POLICE investigating the death of a man found in a Rossendale reservoir today said they are no longer treating his death as suspicious.
The constabulary’s major incident team have been investigating the find at Clough Bottom reservoir, in Water, over the weekend.
The man, who has not be named, has been identified as a 32-year-old man from the Bolton area.
Valley builder James Cropper and his partner Sarah Rowley, discovered the body as they enjoyed a family walk with their two young children on Saturday shortly after 4.30pm.
Officers were called to the reservoir and an underwater team, together with firefighters, spent several hours recovering the body.
Police launched a murder-style investigation into the death and said the case was being treated as ‘unexplained’.
Officers also spent all yesterday searching for clues at the Burnley Road East reservoir and were treating it as a crime scene.
But, following the results of post-mortem tests, today police concluded there were no suspicious circumstances.
A police spokesman said: “Following investigations over the weekend we are no longer treating this death as suspicious.
“A file is being prepared to be handed over to the coroner.”
It is thought the body had been in the water for around seven to 10 days.
Water quality at the United Utilities drinking water reservoir has not been affected.
