A BURNLEY superschool has received a boost after earning a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors.

Sir John Thursby Community College, in Eastern Avenue, was rated “good with many outstanding features”after a recent visit.

The school moved into its new state-of-the-art home in September 2009 and was created following the amalgamation of the former Barden boys and Walshaw girls schools under the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Adrian Lithgow, associate head teacher at Sir John Thursby, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the way it has gone.

“It reflects the progress the school has made over the last few years.

“It is a tremendous achievement for students and staff who have worked very hard to create a multi-cultural and harmonious community.

“We are particularly pleased with the comments on the care we give students and that is high on our agenda.”

In the report, Ofsted inspector Sally Kenyon said: “Visitors cannot help but be inspired by the many and varied opportunities for learning.

“Inspectors observed good or better behaviour in a large majority of lessons.

“Attendance is high because of the relentless drive of staff working in partnership with families.

“The result is the number of persistent absentees has reduced dramatically over the last three years and is now well below the national average.”

Inspectors said the area deemed to be outstanding were care, guidance and support, equal opportunities, partnerships to promote learning and well-being, safeguarding and attendance.

They were also impressed with the friendly atmosphere they experienced within the school.
