A man was lucky to escape with his life after attempting to cross a level crossing in Rawtenstall as the barriers were coming down.
The unnamed man drove across the Rawtenstall West crossing, in New Hall Hey, despite the barriers already closing and signalling the imminent passing of a train.
Luckily, the motorist made it through the gates close to Hardman Mill, but officers warned it could have easily been ‘a different story’.
The risky incident was witnessed by a crossing monitor.
Police later issued a formal warning to the driver.
Police said they were concerned that a number of other motorists may also try to flout the crossing.
A police spokesman said: “The man was obviously in a rush and thought he could save time by forcing his way through before the gates were closed.
“His actions were reckless and could so easily have resulted in death or serious injuries.”
Level crossings are policed by the British Transport Police but bobbies on the beat can step in if an offence is committed.
The British Transport Police are currently running a TV advertising campaign and designed to ‘shock’ road users into taking more notice of the safety precautions.
Rawtenstall West Crossing is controlled by a crossing guard who manually opens and closes the gates.
British Transport Police Insp Adrian Yorston said: “I cannot overemphasise just how dangerous this is.”
