A ROW has erupted over news that Darwen’s street cleaning team is being deployed in Blackburn.
Because of council budget cuts and an increased number of shoppers following the opening of the new Blackburn Market, the two town centre caretakers who previously worked five-days-a-week in Darwen, now work one day a week in Blackburn, and this could rise to two days per week.
Sudell councillor Roy Davies hit out at the change.
He said: “It’s all going one way — to Blackburn — and it’s not on.”
Faryad Hussain, executive member for environmental improvement and sustainability, said that because of cuts, the council “have to utilise the remaining workforce in the best way possible.”
He said: “The increased footfall in Blackburn, following the opening of the Mall and the new Market, means more attention is needed there on certain days.”
