MAJOR regeneration plans have been unveiled to revive the fortunes of one of Burnley’s hardest-hit neighbourhoods.

No fewer than 111 homes will be constructed by Doncaster-based Keepmoat Homes off Accrington Road if borough planners give the go-ahead.

The blocks between Smirthwaite Street, Howard Street and Perth Street have been blighted by vandals and arsonists in recent years.

Following the last major blaze in September, a row of 10 former shops and homes were devastated by fire, causing neighbouring businesses to be evacuated.

Boarded-up homes in Cog Street, Hargher Street and Clough Street are also included in the footprint of the development, which would see a mixture of four, three and two-bedroom properties constructed.

The new arrivals would range from semi-terraced houses to detached homes and townhouses, and would include 11 units which would be let by a registered social landlord.

A Keepmoat spokesman said in a planning statement: "The design team have reviewed all the constraints and oppor-tunities presented by this site and developed a striking design, which will considerably enhance this urban regeneration area of Burnley.”

The same developer is also behind dozens of new homes between Cog Lane and the M65.

Councillors are also set to implement compulsory purchase orders in nearby Burnley Wood.

Remaining homes in Branch Road, Hampden Street and Nuttall Street will be acquired as part of a £410,000 programme.
