FIREFIGHTERS came to the rescue of a ferret called Freda when she got her head stuck under a wooden door.

Owners David Blunt and Pauline Green dialled 999 after the six-week-old pet became trapped at their home in Nuttall Street, Accrington.

Inquisitive Freda was trying to get into the couple’s living room when she misjudged the size of a space between the door and the floorboards.

David, 54, said: “She used to crawl under the gap under the door but I don’t think she realised she had grown since I first got her.

“Her head got stuck and there was no way of getting her out.”

David, who is recovering from a stay in hospital, was unable to free their pet.

Pauline, 51, said: “I got her some water and David tried to lift the door but he couldn’t do it.

“That’s when he said you had better call the fire brigade.”

Three firemen arrived at the house on Monday night and released Freda without causing her any injury by removing the door.

David said: “She is alright now but she was a bit sore. She sulked for an hour or two and then she was back to normal.

“She has been lying down on the bed recovering.

“I’ve blocked the door with books so it doesn’t happen again.”

Originally from Rawtenstall, David has kept ferrets since he was a boy.

He said: “I had about 32 at one point, seven I used to rabbit hunt and lots of babies as well. They are good pets.”

The couple, who have been together for 11 years and have five children between them, said Freda was treated like any other family member.

Pauline said: “She is brilliant, very friendly.

“She likes raw liver, raw eggs, mince meat and she loves chips.

“We make her a cold cup of tea because she always tries to share ours!”
