THE proud dad of three soldiers is getting on his bike to raise money for injured troops.

David Baldwin, who works as a defacement enforcement officer in Blackburn with Darwen, was inspired to organise the 128-mile bike ride by his sons who all served in Afghanistan at the same time.

Phillip, 26, is a Corporal in the Duke of Lancaster’s 2nd Battalion, Daniel, 24, an acting corporal in the RAF, and Matthew, 23, is a royal marine.

“When they were over in Afghanistan I felt very helpless, “ said David, 53, of Blackburn.

“I felt I wanted to do something, so for me this helps satisfy that need and benefits this very worthy cause.”

The journey will take place over three days from June 24 to June 26, starting at Stanley Dock in Liverpool and travelling to Leeds.

It is hoped that Phillip, who is taking time out from his duties in Cyprus, will be able to join the riders for a short leg of the journey.

David will also be joined by seven friends and co-workers, raising money for ABF The Soldier’s Charity, which supports soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need.

David who has previously cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats, said he was not too daunted by the journey but did not expect to have an easy ride.

He said: “There is a misconception that cycling along the canal is easy but it’s really difficult terrain because it’s all flat there’s no free wheeling.

“You have to pedal every single inch.

“I’m inviting people to come along and join us for a bit of the journey to raise awareness and help encourage the riders along.”

Anyone wishing to join the ride should meet at the canal in Feniscowles on Saturday, June 25 at 9.30 am.

A cyclists’ social evening will take place on Saturday, July 9 at the Masonic Hall, Darwen. Tickets are £5.
