Babies across Lancashire are to benefit from a life saving jab which wards off the deadly bug meningitis.

From this week, every baby up to the age of two will be offered the pneumococcal (PCV) vaccine which can prevent babies and toddlers catching life threatening conditions like meningitis.

The vaccine has been used in other countries, leading to a dramatic drop in the disease in babies as well as in older people.

It will protect babies against pneumococcal infection, which, when it enters the bloodstream, can cause serious illnesses such as meningitis, septicaemia, and pneumonia.

A new website www.meningitis-learning.org has been launched by the Meningitis Trust detailing the symptoms of meningitis.
