FIREFIGHTERS are treating a large blaze at a disused factory in Clayton-le-Moors last night as ‘suspicious’.
Three fire engines were called to the building in Canal Street around 6.45pm.
Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way into the factory and spent around three hours tackling the fire.
Crew manager Stephen Hartley said: “It had the potential to be a big incident but luckily we managed to get the fire under control quickly upon our arrival.
“The fire was started on the first floor and it had burned through the floor and spread downstairs.
“The building was heavily smoke-logged and the fire was contained to a probably a 10 metre squared area.
“We are treating it as suspicious as the premises had been broken into.”
Police officers were called to secure the former furniture factory.
