AN elderly couple have been taken to hospital tonight after a fire in their Burnley home.

The pensioners were rescued by firefighters after a pan caught fire in the kitchen of their Kent Street home shortly after 6.30pm.

The couple, thought to be 80 and 84 years-old, were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital by paramedics.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The fire was a small kitchen fire that generated a lot of smoke which the couple had inhaled."
