A TOWN centre’s public toilets will reopen every day following a high profile campaign.
A petition together with pressure from a Facebook group as well as complaints to Hyndburn Council led to the U-turn over the closure of Accrington’s Peel Street toilets.
Former council leaders had made the decision in February to close the toilets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays after the renovation of toilets in the Accrington Market Hall.
Shortly after the doors were closed, protestors placed pink and blue potties outside the doors with a sign encouraging members of the public to call Hyndburn Council.
The new Labour cabinet has now overturned the decision.
Coun Clare Pritchard, who is cabinet member for environmental issues, said: “Shoppers and visitors have, quite rightly, been up in arms about their closure, so it’s good to let them know the normal service is resumed.
“We want to attract more shoppers into our town centres and make sure that they can access to public conveniences is all part of this.”
At the cabinet meeting, which approved the toilets decision on Wednesday night, the former council leader, Peter Britcliffe, said: “It was a trial to see whether it worked on the town centre’s quieter days.
“If we had found that it wasn’t, we would have made the same decision to overturn it.”
The new opening times are Monday to Saturday 8am-5pm and Sunday 8am-2pm.
