ANGRY residents have delivered a petition in a bid to kick-start action at a dilapidated terrace earmarked for demolition five years ago.

Sixty-two people from Chatburn Park Drive, Chatburn Park Avenue and Veevers Street, Brierfield, signed the demand.

Council bosses have now agreed to meet them next week to discuss their concerns over the last remaining houses in Berkeley Street.

Several properties in Veevers Street, Belgrave Street and Claremont Street, were demolished to make way for a new canal-side development off Clitheroe Road.

The block of seven houses in Berkeley Street was left because some residents wanted to buy into a new housing scheme in the area.

However, this stalled as a result of the credit crunch and developer Miller Regeneration pulling out.

The residents now intend to buy into a new housing scheme planned for a nearby site.

Bill Harris, of Chatburn Park Drive, is spearheading a campaign to have the properties razed as soon as possible.

He reported the petition to the Brierfield and Reedley Committee.

After the meeting, Julie Palmer, who helps manage housing regeneration at Pendle Council, said: “As the site’s redevelopment for new housing is unlikely to take place for another four or five years, we drew up a temporary landscaping scheme for the site.

“Residents were consult-ed on the proposals and the majority of people who responded welcomed them.

“All the comments have been considered and a contract has now been let for landscaping work to begin.”

Pendle Council’s Executive Committee will discuss the matter on June 23.
