A FORMER Lancashire chief inspector has been arrested for an alleged breach of the peace following an incident at his home.

Police were called to the home of Shaun Sumner, 52, of Mitton Road, Whalley, to reports of a disturbance at 11.12pm on Thursday, August, 31.

He was arrested and taken to Greenbank police station, Blackburn, because police believed he was behaving in a manner that was regarded as likely to lead to a breach of the peace.

He appeared before Blackburn magistrates, where he denied the allegation.

The case was adjourned. Police have confirmed that no-one was injured during the incident.

Sumner was a police officer for more than 25 years and spent four years as chief inspector in Accrington.

He retired several years ago.

In 1998 his family hit the headlines when a man attacked Sumner's wife, Linda, in a violent road rage incident.

During the attack at traffic lights in Rishton she was hit in the face and had a clump of her hair wrenched out.

Mr Sumner, who was off duty at the time, was also punched by the man during the incident.

The attacker was jailed for six months.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "Shaun Sumner was a chief inspector for Lancashire Constabulary but is no longer a serving officer."
