A MAIN road in Burnley is closed after a water pipe burst early this morning.
United Utilities (UU) engineers were called to Brunshaw Road when the pipe burst at around 4am.
Police arrived at 4.40am and cordoned off a section of the road, near to the junction with Rimington Avenue.
A UU spokesman said the majority of the repair work was completed by 1.30pm, but the road remained closed because the surface had been damaged.
He said: "The burst was caused by a problem with an air valve, which affected pressure in the pipe and caused it to burst.
"Thankfully, no customers lost supply, as we were able to isolate the damaged section of pipe, and supply homes via another part of the water network.
"The pipe repair is nearly complete but there is significant damage to the road surface, so some form of traffic management will remain in place.
“Currently, the road is closed with a diversion in place.
"The council will make a judgement call on whether to remove the diversion and introduce temporary traffic lights, or to keep the diversion in place until the road is repaired.
“We hope to have the road fully reopen by the weekend."
