A YOUNGSTER will be making a splash for the North West Air Ambulance when he attempts to swim the English Channel.
Burnley Bobcats swimming club member Thomas Haymer, 12, will be part of a team of six attempting the 21-mile challenge in July.
The Alder Grange pupil has been drumming up support and awareness for the Air Ambulance by holding a special assembly at his current school and his former primary school, St James the Less.
Thomas told his fellow pupils about the day-to-day routine of the helicopter ambulances and incidents they attend.
Thomas, of Wiswell Close, Rawtenstall, said: “I have been training with the Bobcats in open water for a while and we thought it would be a good idea to do a challenge.
“My family friend Mark Preston, gave us the idea to swim the English Channel as he is doing it at the end of July.
“All my school friends think I am crazy but I am looking forward to it.”
Thomas’s team of six will complete the sponsored challenge in a relay, and they hope to raise between £10,000 and £20,000.
Thomas organised a yellow day at Alder Grange wherel pupils paid £1 to wear something yellow.
