AN 82-YEAR-OLD woman had to be rescued by firefighters today after she suffered a stroke and became trapped in her bathroom.

The elderly lady fell against the bathroom door, blocking the entry of paramedics, at her home in Berkley Close, Nelson this morning.

As the room had no window, firefighters were forced to enter a loft and cut a hole in the ceiling to reach her.

She was then treated by medics and taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

A crew attended the pensioner’s home around 9am.

Crew manager Tom Ashworth said: “She was trapped behind the bathroom door, there was no access because there was no window and she was against the door, so we couldn’t do anything with the door.

“We cut a hole in the ceiling away from where she was lying and two firefighters went in to help her.

“She was conscious but it was very hot in the room.

“It took us about 20 minutes to get her out and we were there for about an hour in total.”
